FAQ

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or BJJ is a martial art based on grappling and ground fighting. There is a heavy emphasis on skill, technique, and leverage to control one’s opponent, leading to a submission through the application of chokes or joint locks.BJJ can trace its roots to Mitsuyo Maeda, a famous Judoka from Japan, who traveled the world to spread his style of fighting. In Brazil he met Carlos Gracie and started teaching Carlos and his family. Legend has it that a frail and smaller Helio, Carlos’s brother, started adapting and modifying the techniques shown; his aim was to use as much leverage as possible and much less strength than originally required. This is widely regarded as the birth of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

BJJ is fun, an effective form of self defence, and a great way to keep fit!
BJJ truly is for everybody and on the mats you will come across people of all ages, professions, fitness levels and abilities.
BJJ is an art that you can keep going for life and will always challenge you – both physically and mentally!
