About Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art focusing largely on grappling and ground fighting. It utilizes natural body leverage and proper technique to obtain dominant control on the ground and, as a result, provides greater position for striking or submission holds. BJJ has been proven, when used properly, to be an effective method for dealing with bigger and stronger opponents and has become increasingly popular due in part to its great success in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. It can be trained for self defense, sport grappling (gi and no-gi) and mixed martial arts competition and has found its way into the training regiment of nearly every successful martial artist worldwide. Translated as “the gentle art,” Brazilian jiu-jitsu focuses on using strength and technique in the most efficient way possible to control and overcome opponents of greater size, strength and aggression. With its roots in the Japanese jiu-jitsu of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the art found its way to Brazil in 1910, when Mitsuyo Maeda, a Japanese jiu-jitsu and judo expert, emigrated to the country. There he became friends with Gastao Gracie, an influential businessman who helped Maeda get established. In return, Maeda taught jiu-jitsu to Gracie’s sons, who became very proficient in the art, eventually passing on Maeda’s teaching in their own schools. The many additions, modifications, and refinements to the art made by the Gracie family were tested against other styles with great success, propelling Gracie jiu-jitsu into the martial arts world and creating a tradition that lives on today.

Is fitness important prior to starting training?

Not at all. Your conditioning will improve as a result of BJJ trainig.

Will i get hurt?

Jiu Jitsu, in Japanese, translates as the ‘The Gentle Art’. You learn how to overcome and submit your opponent without ever throwing a punch or a kick. Without striking, we can train realistically using near maximum force without hurting our training partners.

Is Brazilian jiu-jitsu an effective form of self-defence?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has been proven to be among the most effective arts you can learn. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was made popular in the early 90’s by the Ultimate Fighting Championship. In this no holds-barred contest the effectiveness of the art on bigger stronger opponents took the martial arts world by storm. Thanks to the Ultimate Fighting Championship it is common knowledge that to have a deep understanding of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and it’s techniques is essential part of being a well-rounded martial artist.

Will Brazilian jiu-jitsu allow a weaker opponent to overcome a stronger, more aggressive opponent?

Athletic physical attributes such as strength, speed and flexibility certainly play a part for the successful grappler, but none of these attributes can replace or overcome the power that comes from technique. Skill is usually somewhat comparable for physical attributes to be a factor.

Is Brazilian jiu-jitsu beneficial for women?

Jiu-Jitsu is excellent for rape prevention and other forms of self-defense necessary for women, since most attacks occur on the ground. Strategic grips and proper application of leverage and body weight distribution will allow women to escape from attackers standing or on the ground.

My child is already very energetic. I’m afraid martial arts training will encourage aggression, is this true?

Training at our academy will provide an outlet for children in which to channel aggression and excess energy. Our children’s programs focus on developing behavioral and attitudinal aspects inherent with martial arts such as respect, confidence, discipline and control. Through providing a fun and safe atmosphere for kids, we can foster a healthy environment in which they can learn and develop not only self-defense skills, but life skills as well.

Is the curriculum safe for my child?

The curriculum is very safe for your child. The attention to safety and the student’s well being always comes first. Martial art training is a sport, just like baseball, soccer, football or basketball. Injuries will occur. Collisions will happen. Proper martial arts training include contact. If it doesn’t, how can it possibly be called self-defense? We use the proper safety equipment, instructor supervision and rules in order to be sure your child is as safe as possible while learning a very real and practical self-defense system.
